Understanding Guy's Cliffe and Guys Cave. A talk by Edmund Simons FSA.

On Saturday 17th of December The Guy of Warwick Society hosted a unique opportunity to hear from the Leader of 'The Rock-Cut Building Project', Edmund Simons FSA. His talk focused on the potential for understanding Guy's Cliffe as well as exploring other, comparable sites elsewhere. The event took place in the intimate surroundings of the St Mary Magdalene chapel at Guy's Cliffe, with the huge carved statue of Guy of Warwick watching on.

Rock-cut structures are found throughout the UK, but their highest concentrations are in the soft Permian and Triassic sandstones of the English Midlands.
The Rock-Cut Buildings Project aims, for the first time, to quantify and record these structures, to create typologies and methodologies for understanding them and to develop areas for future research. The project has included collaboration with literary historians, archaeologists, geologists, conservation specialists and others. It is a work in progress, a first attempt to try and understand cave dwelling in the Midlands, its nature, origin, extent, and significance.

Edmund is an Associate Professor at the Cultural Heritage Institute and has worked on similar sites in the UK and from as far afield as Greece and Jordan to the Ascension Islands and South Georgia.

The audience were fascinated by Ed's presentation, which was followed by questions from the audience. The proceeds from the evenings event, over £290, were donated to 'Bring Back Guy's Cliffe', a charitable group of volunteers dedicated to help in the restoration works of Guy's Cliffe House.
